Meet our Team

  • Simon Howie

    Managing Director

    Simon Howie

    Managing Director

Simon founded the butchery business back in 1986 in the small village of Dunning where the business still resides today. The Howie family have been farming locally for the past 100 years. The farming roots made a terrific platform on which to set up the meat business and he is quick to acknowledge the encouragement and support his parents gave him. Simon trained as a butcher in a shop in Perth then decided to go it alone and start is own small shop in Dunning. He went on to open three more shops then the factory in Dunning came along when he bought the neighbouring farm, Findony in 1994. His dad’s uncle Bob Mailer had also owned Findony until the 1950’s and coincidentally he was the local butcher in Dunning too. Simon is a butcher at heart and the love of the meat trade and the people involved makes him extremely passionate about moving the business forward. Seeing products that have been prepared and packed in Dunning sell to happy customers throughout the UK gives him real satisfaction. Ultimately great businesses come down to having great people and Simon is quick to credit his team, many of whom have been with him for over twenty years or more, acknowledging “they are the backbone of our business”.

    • Simon’s favourite product – Sirloin steak

    Gary Conacher

    Managing Director

Gary is the engine-room of the business. After joining the company in 1998 he quickly transformed our retail business and we won the coveted Top Shop 2000 for our Perth shop. We went on to win this title further 4 times as well as the UK wide, Best Butcher shop in Britain. Gary will be quick to compliment his colleagues in the shops but he was the driver behind the success. The Dunning Food factory is now Gary's base and he has 120 people under his charge. The products you see on shelf have all come under his watchful eye. Simon often tells him... "Thank goodness you're in our team Gary"

    • Gary’s favourite product – Beef Stroganoff
  • Jim Park

    Craft Butcher

    Jim Park

    Jim Park

    Craft Butcher

Jim is quite literally our number one employee. He joined Simon in May 1987 in the small Dunning shop, just 5 months after it opened. Together they worked hard at bringing in new customers and began serving meat to hotels and restaurants. By 1990 they had 10 people working in the shop and business was booming. Simon often remarks to new-starts that he is extremely proud of the fact that the early employees such as Jim remain a huge part of the business to this day. Jim makes our sausages - give them a try, you'll be able to taste the 40 years of butchery experience that he adds to the product. There are no short cuts to achieving this kind of heritage.

    • Jim’s favourite product – The Wee Black Pudding

    General Management

James has moved from our sales team into general management, mainly focusing on helping Gary and the production team meet the daily challenges of getting our vans and trucks out on time with everything exactly as it should be. James is a cycling nut so when he’s not working in the factory he’s out racing around the roads of Perthshire.

    Clair Howison

Clair has a wealth of experience in retail brand development and comes with a real passion to drive our business forward with a mixture of new product development, packaging design and social media growth. • Cat MacGregor

    Technical Manager

    Cat MacGregor

    Technical Manager

Cat is our technical manager. In modern day food preparation facilities such as ours it is vital that we are not only squeaky clean but that we can demonstrate that we have all the right procedures in place. We are very happy to say that Cat smiles as she goes about her work due to having a factory production team who really buy into the fact that we need to be the best operators possible.  Cat is supported by Marieta and Kamil, both of whom help share the workload. We have full BRC accreditation which is no mean feat. We are very lucky to have such a talented technical support team.

    • Cat’s favourite product – Smoked back bacon
  • Mike McCafferty

    Mike McCafferty

Mike has been with us for over 20 years and was recently appointed as a Commercial Director within the business. He’s a rare breed in that not only is he a trained butcher but he spent 10 years working within The Gleneagles Hotel as their in-house meat specialist so he came to us (over 20 years ago) with a set of skills which has helped us think like chefs when we deal with our food service customers. He’s a multi-talented guy who takes on all kinds of projects and has become the go-to person for all sorts of issues whether they be sales, technical, NPD or Admin.

    • Mike’s favourite product – The Classic Burger
  • Robbie Singer

    Procurement Manager

    Robbie Singer

    Procurement Manager

Robbie Singer is one of the meat trade’s most knowledgeable people. He began his working career in retail butchery then headed to the Aberdeen Meat Marketing company. This led to him becoming the boss of renowned Perthshire business, Tay Valley Meats Ltd for the gregarious entrepreneur, George Sinclair.  TVM grew to a massive size due to Robbie’s ability to add new products and use innovative new technologies to produce them.

He then went on to buy the shop that Simon served his apprenticeship in, Rattray Butchers Perth, and subsequently sold this business to Simon in 1996. He then joined Simon Howie as the meat buyer as well as providing his experience and knowledge for all round support. Robbie can turn his hand to any part of the business and his friendly and helpful manner makes him a hugely valuable asset to the business.

Robbie is very quick to acknowledge the support he gets from Patrycja Zak, his buying assistant. Patrycja is always smiling and this brings sense of fun and enjoyment to her work, which can often be demanding and detailed. Patrycja works in a close partnership with Robbie and she is gaining experience and knowledge to the extent that he can now rely on her for many of the most important duties in the buying department.

    • Robbie's Favourite Product - Beef Olives
  • Crom

    Head Butcher

    Crom

    Head Butcher

Crom is actually Albert Cromarty but very few people know this as he simply answers to his shortened name. Crom joined us in 1993 and has seen the business move from a single shop in Dunning to the factory that we now have at Findony Farm. He is a butcher of the highest calibre and as such his knife skills are simply excellent. He has great pace and capacity for work and can be seen working his way through a mountain of sirloins and other cuts, daily in the factory. Ultimately it’s people like Crom who help make our company successful. He originally hails from Orkney which is very evident when you chat to him. Always smiling and happy at his work (ok, most of the time) he is a very popular member of our team.

    • Crom's Favourite Product - Sirloin Steak
  • George Wood

    Factory Manager

    George Wood

    Factory Manager

George Wood joined us in 1992. He originally worked in our Auchterarder shop and as a local lad he was extremely popular with our customers. George quickly showed that he could step up and be relied upon so we soon promoted him to manager of the shop. When we opened our factory premises in 1997 we had grown our hotel supply business to such an extent that George took over the production management of this and today he still provides right-hand-man support to Gary in the factory, always making sure that details have been attended to and never looking at his watch. George will be the first to offer to go out of his way to help in any situation and his can-do attitude, flexibility and crucially his terrific butchery knowledge makes him someone that we trust and value in the business.

    • George's favourite product - Simon's Choice Steak, Onion and Thyme Sausages
  • Ewan Allen

    Sales Manager

    Ewan Allen

    Sales Manager

Ewan recently joined us, as sales Manager, from one of the UK’s national food service suppliers. He brings bags of enthusiasm and drive to his role and we look forward to seeing him grow our long list of hotel and restaurant customers. Ewan will link up with our butchery and despatch teams to ensure that we are getting things spot on every day and that our customers see how important they are to us. It’s a very competitive and challenging environment but there’s not doubt Ewan is up to the task.

  • Patrycja Zak

    Purchasing

    Patrycja Zak

    Purchasing

Patrycja works alongside Robbie in our procurement team. This role is vital to the smooth running of our business as without the right raw materials and packaging we simply cannot serve our customers.  Patrycja is constantly striving to  improve her skills and knowledge so we look  forward to seeing her progress and develop such that we become as slick and profitable as possible. Sourcing the best ingredients and controlling cost has become our mantra at Simon Howie Foods.

    • Sweetcure Back Bacon
  • Kamil Skrzeszowski

Kamil has been with us for 4 years now. He has principally been focused on supporting Cat MacGregor in our technical team but his broad skill set and can-do attitude means that he gets involved in many of the day to day production and general management issues. He is a very popular member of the team and we look forward to seeing him progress up though the ranks as he gets more involved in helping us to optimise our production and develop our people.
